Leaving Ibiza and crossing the Freus we arrive at the Island of Espalmador. A private island but with free access, its main beach is S´Alga, known for its sulfurous mud baths that are very beneficial for the skin. It is an ideal place to anchor but you have to be careful with the small lows. It is not advisable to enter the small cove behind the Islands of Pouet and Rodona if you do not have a shallow draft. Anchoring in Cala Torretas is only advisable for shallow draft boats since it does not stretch for more than a meter or a meter and a half. It is necessary to access by the north slope of the islet because for the south only the auxiliaries can go. In the Port of Espalmador we will find a draft between 3 and 6 meters, but we will be exposed to winds from the South, Southwest and West. If you come from the north you must be careful with the rocks and shoals that extend from the coast.
Formentera is more than just the last Paradise in the Mediterranean in which to enjoy a classic summer vacation, surrounded by peace, tranquility and a surprisingly preserved environment. Formentera is the smallest inhabited island in the Balearic Islands. It is located south of the island of Ibiza just 2 nautical miles from it, although the distance between the ports of Ibiza and La Savina (Formentera) is 12 miles.
Despite being a small island, its jagged shape means that it has a large coastline (82 km.) In proportion to its surface.
Along the coast there are many beaches, large and small, and numerous coves and lonely corners in which to get lost.
The island of Formentera is small, but full of pine and Savina forests, with its salt flats and its rural interior. Thanks to the oceanic seagrass meadows, the largest in the Mediterranean, declared by Unesco Underwater Heritage of Humanity (unique in the Mediterranean).
If you go to Formentera, you have to start with Espalmador, a protected semi-desert island with a bay with buoys so as not to damage the bottom of Poseidonias. It is a unique experience so it is important that you reserve a buoy if you go in high season otherwise, you will not have a free place.
Espalmador is a small islet located north of Formentera. It is approximately 2,925 m. long and 800 m. wide. Its coast is steep, with the exception of a magnificent cove to the South and another, smaller one, to the Northwest, which, because it is protected by a small islet, “Illa de Sa Torreta”, constitutes an ideal place to shelter boats.
Be careful with the entrance to Espalmador, there is a very dangerous low that we indicate in the photo on the map.
It also has a small muddy lagoon in which tourists who arrive with their yachts tend to bathe and get muddy. To get to that point, you have to continue from the beach to the large palm tree in the center of the island.
Bathing in the mud is one of the delights of S´Espalmador, and it is also a lot of fun.
If you want to get there, you have to go to the northern end of Platja de s’Alga and follow the narrow brushy path to the back of the beach. You will finally arrive at a salt flat that has liquid mud in the center.
You can also orient yourself by continuing from the beach to the large palm tree in the center of the island.
Although it has no therapeutic benefits, on a sunny day, it is nice and fun to roll and smear yourself with cool mud. Let it dry as you walk back to the beach and get in the water to come out clean afterwards. A different experience and the children love it!
Espalmador is surrounded by other small islets: Illa Castavi and Illa des Porcs.
Its beaches are of transparent water and white sand. When the tide is low, you can walk from Formentera to Espalmador on a small stretch of water that covers little, as can be seen in the photograph, (Es Trocadors pass). In any case, it is preferable to visit it by means of a small boat so that our excursion is safer.
In short, Espalmador is a place to dream; a small island without inhabitants, a few meters from the north coast of Formentera with white sand beaches and a sea of blue waters. There is no cement anywhere and its visitors are mostly luxury yachts, rental boats and especially sailboats from Ibiza. You can observe this paradise from Illetes Beach, but although it seems a distance that can be overcome by swimming, the strong currents in the area advise against it. Its access is recommended by boat or sailboat.
In the small bay of Espalmador there are buoys and in the background there are unfortunately too many human remains, so please do not throw cans, garbage, etc. in a place as wonderful as Espalmador in Formentera, a true paradise that we have to preserve together. .
Illetes beach is the great attraction of Ibiza and Formentera. The beaches of Illetes, located in the northernmost point of the island, and the closest to the island of Espalmador, (just 150m.), Are the most visited and frequented by tourists but still retain the charm of the beaches natural and located in a virgin environment without cement to ruin the landscape.
With a beach of fine white and pink sand, Illetes has one of the best waters in the Mediterranean, where you can anchor without great danger and with different offers of beach bars, restaurants, etc.
In Illetes we recommend the chiringuito "EL TIBURON", a very nice place with 5 * hotel prices, which offers good mojitos and better caipirinhas. It is necessary to call to reserve a table, being the snack food and the sangria of wine, champagne, etc.
Very close you have the "Big Sur", a beach bar where most of the customers are usually Italian. An ideal place for those who really like to party.
There are also excellent fish restaurants, with high prices and in high season it is necessary to call and reserve to avoid disappointment.
There are also other restaurants in the area, and in some of them you can eat with your feet in the sand. A pleasure to be able to enjoy an idyllic setting.
The north end is the quietest part of the long beach and is the domain of naturists, since it is an official nudist beach and you will not have problems since people are used to “everything”.
On the east side (Levante) we have Llevant Beach, also located on the northern tip of the island, but in the Levante area, as its name suggests.
It is also a large beach and, although it is the closest area to Illetes and therefore quite busy, due to its length it is possible to find quieter and more solitary places, although of course there are restaurants and kiosks, and their proximity With Illetes, you can walk all the beaches in the north of the island. Declared a World Heritage Site.
This coast in Summers usually has the most intense winds since it usually blows from the east, be careful with the anchorages on this coast with the naked eye you can see the differences in the waves.
